Carter-White & Shaw began in 1991, when
Ron Jordan, our Senior Principal Director, left his
position as a legal recruiter with Pat Franklyn &
Associates to begin his own firm. Our beginnings are
humble. Armed with a volume of
Martindale-Hubbell®, a rotary phone, a single client, and his
mother’s back porch in Berkeley, California as an
office, Ron started Carter-White & Shaw to serve
what was and still is an underserved market in legal
recruiting: Attorneys of color, women attorneys,
gay/lesbian/bisexual and transgender attorneys, and
disabled attorneys who are seeking employers that value
diversity and appreciate their talents.
Carter-White & Shaw’s client base was
initially composed of San Francisco Bay Area law firms,
and our candidates were only law firm partners. The firm
moved from Ron’s mother’s back porch in Berkeley to San
Francisco in 1992 and to Carmel Valley in 1997. The
firm moved to its current headquarters, located on a
22-acre farm in Chestertown, Maryland, on September 10,
2001 to service a growing nationwide clientele and
candidate base. Since the move, our presence nationwide
and in Washington, D.C. and New York in particular has
substantially increased. We aim to be the number
one diversity legal search firm.
